Public Viewing will be held at New Hope Baptist Church on Friday, October 7, 2022, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Due to COVID-19 concerns, we ask that you MASK UP and continue to practice social distancing for your protection and for the safety of others.

Rosie was born in Macon County, Montezuma, Georgia, to Jerry Harvey and Mamie Tookes Harvey on December 11, 1936; she was the ninth child born out of sixteen to this union. She married Richard Carter when she was 16 years old on December 12,1953 and their marriage lasted almost fifty years. She moved to Rochester, New York in 1956 and remained there forty-eight years until she relocated back to Montezuma in 2004.

She dedicated her life to God at the ripe old age of nine years old at New Hope Baptist Church. From that time forward, she worked in the “field” of God. While in Rochester, she was a fine member of Holy Trinity Baptist Church. She was employed ten years at the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital as a nursing assistant. Later, she was employed by Eastman Kodak Company at Elmgrove Plant for twenty-five years, where she retired.

Sister Carter and her husband were also one of the founders of Friendship Baptist Church which was originally located on Terry Street then to Columbia Avenue in Rochester, NY. She was a devoted wife, mother, friend, Sunday school teacher, missionary worker and devoted first lady. She loved people; and could work with any gender, race, or age…it didn’t matter. She loved children and her favorite saying was, “I love you and you can’t do a thing about it” and she meant it too. Singing and praying were her passions and she believed that “There ain’t no harm done calling on Jesus.”

Her children and grandchildren knew that one of their disciplines for “acting up” was “calling on the name of Jesus” in the corner until she felt that Jesus had heard them, and they believed it too. As a foster mother for over thirty years, she raised many children; to her there was no distinction…they were all her children, and she treated all children as though they were her very own. She believed that every child needed and deserved love, but with that love came truth, discipline, a switch, and love…in that order.

For nineteen years, she was the First Lady of St. Paul Baptist Church in Albion, New York. She became the President of the Missionary Board, a member of the Great Lakes Baptist Association Women’s Auxiliary, adult Sunday school teacher, and a member of the RLC Chorus. She was a diligent worker, a virtuous true woman of faith, love, and peace.

When she relocated back to Montezuma, she also held the post of President of the Missionary Board at New Hope Baptist Church. She held this title until she resigned this year, 2022, due to illness. If you were to describe Rosie Mae Carter, it would be best to quote 1 Corinthians 3:9. It says: “For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field under cultivation, God’s building…” She loved working for God. Her favorite saying was “Always give God the Glory…”

Preceded in death by her husband Reverend Richard L. Carter in (2003), she is survived by her daughters:  Delores Bernard and her husband Felton Bernard (Montezuma, GA), Shirley Burke (Rochester, NY) and Latonya Long (Atlanta, GA); her sons: Richard Carter, Jr. and his wife Arnett Carter (Rochester, NY), Shondell, Christopher, Brandon, Jermaine Carter, Will Ruth all of Rochester, NY; Steven Carter and his wife Trina Carter (LaPorte, TX); twenty-two grandchildren (grandchildren she helped raise:  Patrice, Demetrius, Byron, Alice, Antonia, Andrea (Ms. Smith), Anthony (Amp), Charles (Chuck), Aqil, Graycen, Kelsey); twenty great-grands; one great great-grand; special goddaughter, Denae Simmons; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear, dear friends. She is also survived by her brothers: Lucious Harvey and his wife Virginia Harvey (Atlanta, GA); twin brothers: Larry and Harry Harden (Montezuma, GA); sister-in-law, Margaret Norris and her husband James Norris (Jacksonville, FL); brother-in-law, Franklin McLarty (Montezuma, GA).

She was preceded in death by eight brothers and five sisters:  Jerry Harvey, Jr., Claude Harvey, James Harvey, Joe Louis Harvey, Isaac Harvey, Lillie Mae Harvey Hines, Maude Harvey Colson, Annie Lee Harvey Harden, Jimmie Lou Harvey Chandler, Mamie Harvey McLarty, Barbara Delois Harvey Jackson, Frederick Ward Harvey, and Reverend Dr. Willie Gene Harvey.

To my sweet loving Queen Carter, You have loved me always. I am so deeply sadden for our loss. I’ve lost the very who showed and proved to me the true pricelessness of my value at the tender age of 5. The woman who ensured I have a personal relationship with the Great I Am, Jehovah. She ensured I know Jesus personally. She ensured I was baptized by the water and fill with the most precious Holy Spirit. She ensured I was cover, protected, anointed and filled. She instilled how unique, precious and special I am. Loss, absolutely not. I’ve lost nothing but gained revelation of all that she ensured. Life is precious. If you want to truly live, have a personal relationship with the Great I Am, Jehovah. Know Jesus personally. Be baptized by the water and fill with the most precious Holy Spirit.
