She attended the Flint River Farms School and played basketball. After graduating, she attended the Fort Valley State College (now University) where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. She taught in Dodge, Twiggs, and Wilcox Counties before finding a home at the historic D.F. Douglass Elementary School where her passion for education and children flourished. Mildred and Ladd, as she affectionately called him, created many beautiful memories in their 59 years together. She enjoyed traveling with Ladd to visit family and friends in Florida and wherever the car took them. In retirement years, you would see her, Nita, and Ladd around town at the Senior Citizen Center, Bread of Life Soup Kitchen, Retired Teachers’ Association meetings, and at various churches and church functions. The three of them always traveled together. You rarely saw one without the other.
