Funeral services for Ms. Verna Hollis of Americus, Georgia will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. in the Chapel of West’s Mortuary with Rev. Joseph Brown officiating. Burial will follow at the Eastview Cemetery.
Miss Verna Hollis was born in Sumter County, Georgia on July 9, 1948 to the late Cleve Hollis and the late Rosa Lee Carter.
During the Civil Rights Movement in Southwest Georgia in 1963, Miss Hollis was arrested along with a group of other young girls and spent 45 days in the Leesburg Stockade. Those girls later became known as The Leesburg Stockade Girls and the Lost Girls of Sumter County. As an adult she worked at King’s Restaurant and did housekeeping for about fifteen years until she became disabled. God called her home on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, Georgia
Miss Hollis will lovingly be remembered by her son Joseph Jones II, a U.S. Military Veteran. Joseph has five daughters and three sons: Christopher Jones and wife Triteasha, Kimberly and her two lovely sons, Ambrosia Jones and her lovely daughter, Cynthia Angrish and her lovely daughter, Broderick Jones and his lovely daughter, Taqwan McCrary, Verlencia Jones and Shekierria Jones and five beautiful great grandchildren. Miss Hollis also has two brothers and one sister: Charles Edward Hollis and his two sons and two daughters: Clifford Washington III and his wife, Sandra Lee Washington and her son and daughter. Sandra lost a lovely little girl early in life.
